Al and Lu’s story

Al (53) and Lu (41) met when he was a sales manager and she was a secretary at a family-owned grommet factory on an industrial estate just outside Redditch.

Married around 10 years, they have no children, instead focusing their attention on the home, garden and lifestyle they’ve worked hard to achieve, and their dog, Ralph (named after a former boss Al didn’t like).

Al has worked hard for the trappings of success, as a ‘company man’ with the same employer. He did well when the factory was bought by a Far East company and became part of a global concern, which has allowed him to see the world a little.

That enabled Al and Lu to splash out a little, on a home extension and cruise holidays. It also gave Lu the freedom to give up her job and start a small business as an up-market florist.

The CD autochanger in Al’s mid- range Jaguar XE contains all the Drivetime rock classics – the Eagles, Eric Clapton etc. Weekends consist of a Friday night curry (same restaurant, same dish, with the same friends every week), a round of golf on a Saturday morning then an afternoon at the rugby club with his mates.

Lu is the real home-maker and creative one, so she takes the lead on anything DIY related –hence her insistence on reading instructions and getting things right. Her Saturday mornings are spent in the shop, before lunch and some shopping. Her Mazda MX5 has a Bluetooth connection to play her 90s pop playlists. She’s also happy for Al to get home from the rugby half-cut, because it means he’s snoring away on the sofa by the time Strictly starts and she can enjoy a bottle of wine in peace.

Because of their active lifestyle and young outlook on life, their sense of humour is quite juvenile – they enjoy the Hangover and Ted movies. If you ever need an innuendo, Al will give you one.

Lu is very capable of being one of the lads and can hold her own with the banter in their local pub and at the golf club. Secretly she dreams of being a contestant on Come Dine With Me, but that’s because she wants to show off their home, not her cooking.
